The Private Equity Growth Capital Council (PEGCC) has just released a report which details private equity spending by country, region, and more, drilling all the way down to spending at the state and Congressional district level. It may be worthwhile checking it out to help focus your private equity job search.
Private equity investment in North America led the pack, with 60.7% of all capital invested. Surprisingly, Central and South American PE investment edged out Asia, according to a press release from PEGCC.
The PEGCC data for North America listed more than $148 billion worth of investments spread among 1,234 U.S.-based companies in 2010. California topped the list with $16 billion invested among 195 companies, followed by Illinois with $10.7 billion in investments.
Rounding out the top five states for private equity deal value were New York, Texas and Connecticut. Overall, 21 states had more than $1 billion in private equity capital invested during 2010.
The report does shed some new light on the geographic dispersion of private equity investment throughout the U.S., along with the number of active private equity firms.
“This reports blasts the mythology that private equity is west or east coast-centric,” said interim PEGCC President Steve Judge. “In fact, private equity is driving investment activity for thousands of companies, providing an economic jolt from Billings, Montana to Portland, Maine to Zanesville, Ohio. And it is doing so at a time when our economy badly needs growth investment.”
You can read the full report as a PDF at PEGCC’s website. And if you really want to follow the money and get an up-to-date look at what’s happening in the private equity industry, check out the Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst Conference, Sept. 27-28 in New York City.
